April 2015

This chart shows the historical number of National Instant Criminal Background System (NICS) Checks initiated by New Yorkers each month of March since 1999.

The March 2015 NICS Checks of 29,889 is the third highest March total in 17 years. Although the March 2015 raw number is lower than March 2013 and 2014, the overall trend is clear: there has been a significantly larger volume in NICS checks since 2013, when the SAFE Act was enacted.

To the consternation of the anti-civil rights crowd, the wayward law appears to have succeeded in a wholly unintended way: passage of the so-called SAFE Act, (commonly known as the UNSAFE Act), has further strengthened New Yorkers' resolve to defend and exert their Second Amendment rights. Every month, tens of thousands of New Yorkers reject the failed law through likely firearms purchases. The trend indicates that the SAFE Act has succeeded in expanding firearms ownership throughout the state.
